Gravel Driveway Cost Calculator

A proper gravel driveway is two layers: a compacted base and a top dressing — usually different products at different prices. This calculator prices both layers at your supplier's rates and adds them into one estimate.

Step 1 · Driveway area & shape
Step 2 · Dimensions
Step 3 · Base layer (compacted — typically 4–6" of crusher run)
Step 4 · Top layer (surface — typically 2–3" of clean stone)

How the driveway cost estimate works

Each layer is calculated independently: your driveway area × that layer's depth = volume, converted to tons with that layer's material density, multiplied by that layer's price. The two layer costs are then added together, and the formula line shows both layers so you can verify every step.

Worked example: a 12×50 ft driveway (600 ft²) with a 4-inch crusher-run base and a 3-inch #57 top: the base is about 7.4 yd³ ≈ 11.9 tons; the top about 5.6 yd³ ≈ 7.5 tons. At $40/ton base and $45/ton top, that's roughly $475 + $338 ≈ $813 of material before delivery.

Not in the estimate: delivery, grading and site prep, geotextile fabric, edging, culverts or drainage work, and labor. Those routinely add as much as the stone itself — get full quotes before budgeting. And because both layers compact, ordering 5–10% extra material is standard practice.

Driveway cost FAQ

How much does a gravel driveway cost?

Material cost scales with your driveway's size and the rates local suppliers quote — which is exactly what this calculator computes instead of quoting a national average. As a worked example: a 12×50 foot driveway with a 4-inch crusher-run base plus a 3-inch #57 top layer works out to roughly 11.9 tons of base and 7.5 tons of top stone; at $40/ton and $45/ton respectively, that's about $815 of material. Add delivery, edging, and grading on top.

Should the base and top layer be priced separately?

Usually yes. The base layer (typically crusher run) and the top layer (typically a clean stone like #57) are often different products at different prices, and suppliers may quote them independently. This calculator takes a separate rate for each layer.

What costs does this estimate not include?

Delivery, site preparation and grading, edging, geotextile fabric, drainage work, and labor if you hire it out. For many driveways those items together rival the material cost, so get full quotes from contractors or suppliers before budgeting.
